Poem: "The Captain Weeps at the Bell Tower" by me

"Monument"

"The Captain Weeps at the Bell Tower"

He is bored or disembodied and
while the weather is hot, wet,
or hidden, he looks at the
mountains because his maker, born in
the covenants of country and a sweet horror
of a thousand and one mirrors in perpetuity,
made him pensive, unable to look his
predecessors nor his posterity in the eye.

The Captain weeps at the bell tower
every day at noon, with his copper ears ringing and
his neck ignoring the bay down passed libraries and gymnasiums.
He weeps green streaks.
He stains the pedestal
they have stuck down his throat.
He weeps while the bells hang in anticipation above him,
waiting to divide the day.

Photopoetryblog: "Florecer"

Photo: "Juan L.'s Jacaranda"
Poem: "El jacarandá" by Juan L. Ortiz

                                                                                                 a su limbo?

=======================================

The Jacaranda Tree by Juan L. Ortiz (translation by Mac J. Wilson)

The jacaranda tree is about to flower... friend...
Surely it's about to flower... have you felt it?

But where, that purple longing, where, can  you
                                                                                tell me?

Certainly it hints in the unknown what of its twigs...

How is it, if not, that absent presence, or perhaps, that even from an invisibility,
                                                                                                obsesses, self-evidently
the very center of the afternoon,
                                              over what oblivion?
calling from a dream or a bit less, still,
                                              when a ghostly pink,
marks it, indifferently, and frees it, frees it
                                                                                    to its limbo?

Photopoetryblog: To Autumn

Photo: "Welcoming Autumn" by me
Poem: "To Autumn: by John Keats

"To Autumn" by John Keats

Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness,
Close bosom-friend of the maturing sun;
Conspiring with him how to load and bless
With fruit the vines that round the thatch-eves run;
To bend with apples the moss'd cottage-trees,
And fill all fruit with ripeness to the core;
To swell the gourd, and plump the hazel shells
With a sweet kernel; to set budding more,
And still more, later flowers for the bees,
Until they think warm days will never cease,
for summer has o'er-brimm'd their clammy cells.

Who hath not seen thee oft amid thy store?
Sometimes whoever seeks abroad may find
Thee sitting careless on a granary floor,
Thy hair soft-lifted by the winnowing wind;
Or on a half-reap'd furrow sound asleep,
Drows'd with the fume of poppies, while thy hook
Spares the next swath and all its twined flowers:
And sometimes like a gleaner thou dost keep
Steady thy laden head across a brook;
Or by a cyder-press, with patient look,
Thou watchest the last oozings hours by hours.

Where are the songs of spring? Ay, Where are they?
Think not of them, thou hast thy music too, --
While barred clouds bloom the soft-dying day,
and touch the stubble-plains with rosy hue;
Then in a wailful choir the small gnats mourn
Among the river sallows, borne aloft
Or sinking as the light wind lives or dies;
And full-grown lambs loud bleat from hilly bourn;
Hedge-crickets sing; and now with treble soft
The red-breast whistles from a garden-croft;
And gathering swallows twitter in the skies.

Poetry Month 8 / Mes de poesía 8: "The Best of It"

The Best of It

However carved up
or pared down we get
we keep on making
the best of it as though
it doesn't matter that
our acre's down to
a square foot. As
though our garden
could be one bean
and we'd rejoice if
it flourishes, as
though one bean
could nourish us.

Poem(a): "Palabrir: poesía" by Cecilia Vicuña (found in PALABRARmás [1984] / encontrado en PALABRARmás [1984])

Palabrir: poesía

Poesía, del griego poiesis: creación,
de poienin: hacer
- Dicionario Etimológico
Joan Corominas

Elegy

& what if hope crashes through the door what if

that lasts a somersault?

hope for serendipity

even if a series of meals were all between us

even if the aeons lined up out

of order

what are years if not measured by trees

What Thing a Bird Would Love

As I was faring home
The slow hill-climbing way
A lonely bird sang once
and seemed to bid me stay.

I paused to rest and turned,
And if I had not turned,
I had not seen the west
Behind me, how it burned.

So when he sang again
As I resumed the slope,
My heart regarded him--
I turned again with hope.

The sunset!--and beneath
The valley ebon dark
And featureless, wherein
A lamp was but a spark.

But that he would not cease,
But still would call and call
When I must go was proof
The sunset was not all.

I left him to the waste
And gathering stars above,
In doubt if I could know
What thing a bird would love.

Barro Tal Vez

Barro tal vez

Y es que esta es mi corteza

Donde el hacha golpeará
Donde el río secará para callar

Poetry Month 3 / Mes de poesía 3: "Cosas"

Poem(a): "Cosas" by Gabriela Mistral (found in Tala [1938] / encontrado en Tala [1938])

Cosas

A Max Daireaux

1
Amo las cosas que nunca tuve
con las otras que ya no tengo:
Yo toco un agua silenciosa,
parada en pastos friolentos,
que sin un viento tiritaba
en el huerto que era mi huerto.
La miro como la miraba;
me da un extraño pensamiento,
y juego, lenta, con esa agua
como con pez o con misterio.

2
Pienso en umbral donde dejé
pasos alegres que ya no llevo,
y en el umbral veo una llaga
llena de musgo y de silencio.

3
Me busco un verso que he perdido
que a los siete años me dijeron.
Fue una mujer haciendo pan
y yo su santa boca veo.

4
Vien un aroma roto en ráfagas;
soy muy dichosa si lo siento;

5
Un río suena siempre cerca.
Ha cuarenta años que lo siento.
Es canturía de mi sangre
o bien un ritmo que me dieron.
O el río Elqui de mi infancia
que me repecho y me vadeo.
Nunca lo pierdo; pecho a pecho,
como dos niños nos tenemos.

6
Cuando sueño la Cordillera,
camino por desfiladeros,
y voy oyéndoles, sin tregua,
un silbo casi juramento.

7
Veo el remate del Pacífico
amoratado mi archipiélago,
y de una isla me ha quedado
un olor acre de alción muerto...

8
Un dorso, un dorso grave y dulce,
remata el sueño que yo sueño.
Es al final de mi camino
y me descanso cuando llego.
Es tronco muerto o es mi padre,
el vago dorso ceniciento.
Yo no pregunto, no lo turbo.
Me tiendo junto, callo y duermo.

9
Amo una piedra de Oaxaca
o Guatemala, a que me acerco,
roja y fija como mi cara
y cuya grieta da un aliento.
Al dormirme queda desnuda;
no sé por qué yo la volteo.
Y tal vez nunca la he tenido
y es mi sepulcro lo que veo...

Poem(a): "Superstición" by Gonzalo Millán (found in Virus [1987] / encontrado en Virus [1987])
------------------------------------

Vuelves a visitar unas calles
apacibles y arboladas
con moreras que todos los años
retiñen sus sombras
con la tinta de sus frutos maduros,
solamente para redimir
unas líneas que olvidaste apuntar
y que al momento reviven
como si esperaran su rescate.

BENEDICTION

For what we are given.

For being mindful of what we are given.

For those who grieve and those who celebrate.
For those who remain grateful in the face of everything.

For the assembly of words that links us together.
For individual speech that becomes speech shared.

For the transformations a written page may effect in us.
For those who pay attention.

For the teacher who gave us the chrysalis of language.
For the comrades of the heart who left us signposts.

For the parent who gave us the one ethic of discipline.
For ourselves who may take discipline to heart, and not resent it.

For the second chance that is the writing down.
For those who know that half of poetry is silence.

For the language of breath, and the breath that is prayer.
For those who wake to light, and know the depths of sacrament.

For this common meal, and us who bow our heads and partake.
For those who remember that "So be it" is also written

Amen.
